Twice As Nice Mother & Child is a 501(c)(3) organization located in Gurnee that strives to ensure that mothers and children have their most basic needs met. They provide help and hope to families in crisis by offering assistance free of charge. They distribute gently used items (children’s clothing and shoes – newborn to size 12, maternity wear, baby gear, children’s books) and diapers, wipes and infant formula through partnerships with social service agencies and direct service. The organization is run entirely by a tiny but mighty team of 10 volunteers. They have no paid staff.
As a mother of six, the organization’s founder and executive director, Ann Marie Mathis, knows how challenging it can be to care for young children. Parenting can be even more difficult when you lack the necessities. Clothing and diapers are basic needs for children—as essential to their health and well-being as food, shelter and a parent’s love. Yet many families struggle to afford these items and limited resources exist to help them. Ann Marie believes that all mothers, regardless of income or circumstance, should be able to provide their children with basic needs—and that is why she started the organization. She had been making regular donations of clothing, shoes and baby gear from her own children to local charitable organizations for years, but was never sure where those donations ended up. She realized that she could make a difference and help families in crisis by making sure that her donations, and the donations of others, were getting to those that truly needed them. Armed with a M.S. and B.S. in organizational leadership, and over 20 years of experience in the corporate world, she focused on finding the right combination of her love of management and passion for helping others. In August 2010, her dream became a reality and Twice As Nice Mother & Child was established as an official 501(c)(3) organization.
At its inception, Ann Marie was working full-time in a corporate position and ran the organization on a part-time basis from her home, storing donations in the basement. She not only collected donations from her own children, but from family, friends and neighbors. In addition to the gently used items, she recognized that families also needed help with diapers, wipes and infant formula—and she began collecting those items as well. Within two years, there was no more space left in the basement and she had to lease a unit at a local storage facility. She also made the decision to leave her corporate position and forfeit her salary to focus on running the charitable organization full-time. By the end of 2013, she had outgrown the storage unit and it became necessary to find a larger space to house her inventory—and a location where she could better serve her rapidly expanding list of partners. She and her husband found an office and warehouse in early 2014, where they both ran their separate businesses. In October 2016, the organization moved to its own location that provided more space and the ability to serve local families directly.
What began as a collection of gently used items in her basement 7 years ago has evolved into a brick and mortar organization that has become a resource for over 30 social service agencies and several underserved families in Lake County. Twice As Nice Mother & Child provides help to over 150 children every month and that number continues to grow. They joined the National Diaper Bank Network in 2013 and have distributed over 500,000 diapers since then that have kept children clean, dry and healthy. The organization has expanded its programs and services to include weekly home pick-up service for donations, a mobile diaper pantry being implemented in early 2018 and the development of diaper programs for new moms with local hospitals. They are hosting larger-scale fundraising events, engaging in more community outreach activities, writing grants to diversify their funding sources and expanding their Board of Directors. The organization has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years and they continue to extend their reach to provide even more families with the help that they need to care for their children safely—and with dignity. Twice As Nice Mother & Child helps to restore stability and hope during challenging times by eliminating barriers to access necessities for the most vulnerable residents of Lake County.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Ann Marie relocated to Illinois in 2000 with her then employer. She and her husband, Michael, live in Wadsworth with their six children.
