Ann Marie Mathis is the founder and executive director of Twice As Nice Mother & Child, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that strives to ensure that mothers and children have their most basic needs met. The organization solicits and collects donations of gently used items (children’s clothing/shoes, maternity wear, infant care essentials, children’s books) and provides them to families FREE OF CHARGE. The organization also provides diapers, wipes and infant formula.
The idea for Twice As Nice Mother & Child came about once Ann Marie became a mother. As a mother of six young children, she knows firsthand what it takes to care for a child on a daily basis and what a struggle it can be without the essentials. After her first child was born in 2008, she thought about how difficult it would be for a mother who was unable to provide her child with basics like clothing, shoes or a crib. She was making regular donations of clothing that her daughter had outgrown and baby gear to other charitable organizations, but she was never really sure where those donations ended up. Were they sold? Were they discarded or recycled? Did they even reach families that needed them? She realized that she could make a difference and help families in crisis by making sure that her donations, and the donations of others, were getting to those that truly needed them. Following the birth of her second child in early 2010, she began to research how to start a nonprofit organization in the hope of creating one that could help mothers and children in need. Gently used items seemed like the perfect thing to focus on since her goal was to be able to provide assistance to families free of charge—and she was already collecting items from her own children. Armed with a M.S. and B.S. in organizational leadership, and over 20 years of experience in the corporate world, she focused on finding the right combination of her love of management and passion for helping others. In August 2010, her dream became a reality and Twice as Nice Mother & Child was established as an official nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
At its inception, Ann Marie was working full-time in a corporate position and ran the organization on a part-time basis from her home, storing donations in the basement. She not only collected donations from her own children, but from family, friends and neighbors. In addition to the gently used items, she recognized that families also needed help with diapers, wipes and infant formula—and she began collecting and offering those items as well. Within two years, there was no more space left in the basement and she had to lease a unit at a local storage facility. She also made the decision to leave her corporate position and forfeit her salary to focus on running the charitable organization full-time. By the end of 2013, she had outgrown the storage unit and it became necessary to find a larger space to house her inventory—and a location where she could better serve her rapidly expanding list of partners. She and her husband found an office and warehouse in early 2014, where they both ran their separate businesses. In October 2016, the organization moved to its own location that provided more space and the ability to serve local families directly.
Twice As Nice Mother & Child has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years that has allowed them to provide much needed assistance to families in Illinois. The organization, which primarily works directly with other charitable organizations dedicated to helping mothers and children, continues to expand its list of partners. Through its relationships with local social service agencies and non-profit organizations, Twice As Nice Mother & Child has been able to extend its reach to provide even more families with the help that they need to care for their children safely—and with dignity. Regardless of the type of assistance that is needed, Twice As Nice Mother & Child can help restore stability and hope during challenging times.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Ann Marie relocated to Illinois in 2000 with her then employer. She and her husband, Michael, live in Wadsworth with their six children.
